WHAT MOTIVATED YOU TO BECOME A VEGAN?
For me, it's a personal belief in doing what's right. I firmly believe that every living (sentient) being deserves the right to live. However, while I choose a vegan lifestyle, I respect others' dietary choices.
ARE THERE ANY COMMON MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT VEGANISM YOU'D LIKE TO DEBUNK?
One common misconception is the idea of protein deficiency in a vegan diet. In reality, there are plenty of protein sources available for vegans, allowing them to maintain a balanced diet. Many vegans have achieved greatness in fields such as sports, proving the power of a plant-based diet.
HOW DO YOU THINK WE CAN ENCOURAGE MORE PEOPLE TO ADOPT A VEGAN LIFESTYLE?
Just be open minded. Choose some vegan options in the menu. You will be pleasantly surprised how delicious some of these options can be.
DO YOU HAVE ANY FAVOURITE VEGAN/VEGETARIAN RECIPES TO SHARE?
I take pride in my delicious vegan "mutton" curry, and I can whip up a fantastic vegan mee goreng.
TELL ME ABOUT YOUR CAREER JOURNEY WITH RSM
My professional journey began back in 2009, when I joined RSM Singapore in 2009 as a fresh graduate. In 2013, I had the opportunity to work on a 2.5-year secondment with RSM in Perth. After that enriching experience, I returned to RSM Singapore, where I continued to hone my skills in audit and corporate restructuring. In 2019, I once again found myself in Perth. I currently serve as an audit principal and hold the co-leadership role for the property and construction sector group in Perth.
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO PURSUE THIS CAREER PATH?
My journey was greatly influenced by the vast opportunities that the RSM Network of firms offers. The secondment experience and leadership programs in both RSM Singapore and RSM Australia played a pivotal role in shaping my career.
CAN YOU SHARE THE MOST VALUABLE PROFESSIONAL ADIVCE YOU HAVE EVER RECEIVED?
The best piece of advice I've received is to take initiatives. Instead of waiting for opportunities to come to you, be proactive and seize the initiative by seeking out new projects, responsibilities, and changes to foster personal and professional growth.
HOW HAS YOUR SHIFT FROM VEGETARIAN TO VEGAN IMPACTED YOUR LIFE AND CAREER?
Embracing a vegan lifestyle has heightened my self-awareness, making me more attuned to various aspects of my life. This heightened self-awareness has become a valuable asset in my decision-making process and has also enhanced my sensitivity to subtle details that can influence my relationships with others.
This newfound awareness has definitely had a positive impact in my career of late.
WHAT ARE SOME OF THE CHALLENGES YOU HAVE FACED AS A VEGETARIAN AND NOW A NEWFOUND VEGAN IN YOUR INDUSTRY?
Sometimes (not very often), my dietary restrictions and constraints may have been omitted during catering of food during work and social events. It is actually even harder now that I’m slowly converting into a vegan.
One added complication is that I don’t take garlic and onions for spiritual reasons. This combination has created some headaches for people planning my food for me.
ANY ADVICE OR EXPERIENCES YOU'D LIKE TO SHARE WITH YOUNG VEGANS LOOKING TO FOLLOW YOUR PROFESSIONAL PATH?
First and foremost, avoid judgment and respect others' choices. I think this is an important first step to being a vegan.
Also, start small. Practise being a vegetarian first, and gradually transition into a vegan lifestyle, as you gain confidence. You might begin with eating vegan-only once a month or once a week to see how it suits you.
