Future of Logistics in India - Digital Systems & Policy

The Economic Survey on India conducted in 2021 revealed that Logistics accounts for ~ 13-14% of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). This statistic emphasizes the sector's economic significance not only in terms of its sectoral contributions, but also in the expenses it incurs.

Logistics has been often-ignored linchpin sector and taken for granted during the growth of trade & commerce. Some recent developments like assigning the status of infrastructure industry in 2020, and creation of Logistics division under the Department of Commerce in the Ministry of Commerce & Industry are key indicators that the future of the logistics sector is going to be redefined and set for transformation.

National Logistics Policy (NLP) was unveiled in Sept 2022 as a re-assurance from the Government of India for this critical sector. Key initiatives under the NLP are Infrastructure development for mobility of goods, Synergetic use of logistics assets, Standardisation of physical assets, process, taxonomy, and advanced usage of technology for enabling convenience in Logistics Operations. Strong focus on Integration of various essential e-portals / systems under one common platform, named Unified Logistics Interface Platform (ULIP) would yield enormous benefits across Industries and sectors.
