The Opportunity

We are looking for a dynamic and detail-oriented Tax Semi-Senior to join our team at RSM Eastern Africa. As a Tax Semi-Senior, you will be responsible for working as part of a team carrying out tax engagements on more challenging assignments under close supervision of a Tax Senior (field team leader) and/or Tax Manager (team leader) or being the field team leader on tax engagements which are straightforward, which includes planning, executing, directing, and completing the engagements, and reporting to the team leader.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field. 
  • Qualified CPA (K) or ACCA
  • Certificate in Tax Administration is an added advantage

Background and Experience

  • Minimum of 2-4 years of tax experience in a similar firm.
  • Strong knowledge of tax laws, regulations, and compliance requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Carrying out tasks, under the supervision of the team leader, which include:
    • Preparing and filing of tax computations and returns for review by the Tax Senior or Tax Manager.
    • Ensuring that approval for filing tax returns is received from the clients and assisting in filing of the returns on a timely basis.
    • Provide assistance to prepare late return notifications and assisting the Tax Manager to inform the clients of the same.
    • Preparing/reviewing installment and final tax payment notifications for review by the Tax Manager, assisting the Tax Manager to advise the clients of the same and ensuring that all payments channeled through the firm are remitted on a timely basis.
    • Assisting the Tax Manager in the review of tax files and reconciling the tax account and dividend tax account to the audit file and ensuring that the clients’ tax status with the revenue authority is current including the reconciliation of tax returns and statements and transfer of overpayments from one year to another.
    • Assisting the Tax Manager in responding to revenue authority tax demands and following up on regularising the clients’ tax status including transfers of tax from one year to another.
    • Assisting the Tax Manager in making waiver applications arising from statement reconciliations and following up on the same.
    • Assisting the Tax Manager in making tax refund applications and following up on the same.
    • Attending to tax queries and correspondence from the client and the revenue authority as allocated by the Tax Senior or Tax Manager. 
    • Being part of the tax team undertaking VAT refund audits, tax due diligences and tax health check engagements.
    • Training and developing the skills of staff in the department.
  • Carrying out any other tasks as delegated by the firm from time-to-time.

Outcomes

  • Achieving an annual productivity of at least 75%.
  • Work as an effective team member to complete assigned tasks within the budgeted time and communicating the engagement progress to the Tax Manager on a daily basis.
  • Ensuring engagement briefing is given by the Tax Manager or Director and where applicable, the engagement planning is completed and signed off by the Tax Manager before commencement of the engagement.
  • Ensuring that review notes on allocated sections are resolved within 24 hours or such other time as agreed with the Tax Manager.
  • Identifying engagement issues and communicating these, as they arise, to the Tax Manager and ensuring that complex issues are discussed and resolved with the Tax Manager or Director.
  • Effectively documenting work and drafting reports to performance standards ensuring not more than 3 review queries arise on the work done.
  • Responding to client correspondence/queries within 24 hours and ensuring the clients are updated of the engagement progress on a regular basis.
  • Supervising Tax Associates assigned to engagements, providing guidance and overall review of deliverables and working papers.
  • Actively developing technical skills on the job and through formal training and complying with the firm’s CPD requirements.
  • Understanding the procedures followed by the revenue authority and creating rapport with the revenue authority.
  • Developing working relationships with the client.
