Job title: Associate

Office: Dublin

Joining date: August 2022

Department: Audit

Summary of role

Working as an Audit Associate at RSM Ireland is both challenging and rewarding. It’s a role that keeps me on my toes, constantly learning, and engaging with a variety of businesses. No two days are the same, which makes the job all the more interesting.

At its core, my job is about helping our clients ensure their financial statements are accurate and compliant with accounting standards. This includes identifying risks, reviewing financial records, verifying transactions and balances to underlying support.

A typical day might involve: Audit fieldwork – reviewing financial statements, verifying balances, and ensuring everything adds up; Client interaction – communicating with business owners and finance teams to understand their processes and gather necessary documentation; Identifying any weaknesses in financial controls and helping to improve them; Working alongside Seniors, Managers and Partners, learning from their expertise, and contributing to the engagement.

What’s been the highlight so far?

The biggest highlight so far has been the mix of professional growth and personal experiences. One standout moment was working on an audit for a fast-growing business where I identified a potential compliance issue and assisted with the resolution. The client’s appreciation of our insight made me realise the real impact of our work beyond just numbers.

Outside of audit, volunteering with RSM Ireland at children's hospitals has been incredibly fulfilling, giving me perspective beyond the corporate world. Plus, working with colleagues from different cultures and educational backgrounds has been rewarding,  learning from their experiences has broadened my own.

What’s been your biggest challenge so far?

Stepping outside my comfort zone – whether it’s presenting findings to clients or tackling technical/professional areas I wasn’t familiar with. Another challenge has been adapting to the fast-paced nature of audit, especially during the busy season. Balancing multiple tasks, tight deadlines, ensuring accuracy in every detail can be demanding, along with studying for a professional accounting qualification. But with the support of the teams and learning to prioritise effectively, I managed to push through. But each challenge has been a learning opportunity, helping me grow technically, professionally but also personally.

What’s surprised you most about working at RSM?

What surprised me most about working at RSM is the level of responsibility and exposure you get early on. I expected to be doing more background tasks as a junior, but from the start, I was involved in key areas of audits, interacting with clients, and contributing in a meaningful way.

The culture has also been a pleasant surprise—there’s a real emphasis on learning and collaboration. Despite the fast-paced environment, there’s always support from colleagues and seniors who are willing to guide you. Plus, the diversity in the team, with people from different backgrounds and experiences, has made it an enriching place to work. It’s not just about numbers; it’s about teamwork, problem-solving, and continuous growth.

What’s next for you at RSM?

Next for me at RSM is continuing to build on the skills and experience I’ve gained so far. I’m looking forward to taking on more responsibility in audits, strengthening my technical knowledge, and developing my ability to manage engagements more independently.

I also want to focus on refining my client interaction skills - being able to not just identify risks but communicate insights that add real value. Long term, I see myself progressing within RSM, potentially specialising in an industry or exploring international opportunities within the firm. With the strong learning culture and support here, I’m excited to see where this journey takes me.

What’s your top tip for someone looking to apply to RSM?

Be curious and open to learning. Have a genuine interest in audit and how our clients operate - it’s not just about numbers but understanding the bigger picture.

Also, don’t be afraid to ask questions. Whether it’s during the application process or once you start, the team is incredibly supportive, and learning from those around you is key to growing in the role.
