Effective April 2022, the RMAT will become part of a new Regulatory Framework for the State Records Act 1998 (the Act).
In accordance with this, all public offices will be required to submit their RMAT results as part of an updated compliance regime conducted by The State Archives and Records Authority (SARA).
The questions in the self-assessment tool are focused on the management of records, information, and data in NSW public offices, and how these practices align with the requirements of the Act. They highlight the links between records management and requirements for cyber security, privacy, data sharing, open data, and information access (GIPAA). They are designed to assist:

What happens to the RMAT?
The RMAT results are recorded, weighted, and applied to provide an organisational maturity level out of 5. A score of 3 is defined within the RMAT “Baseline Compliance”, which meets SARA’s requirements for high-risk/high-value records and information. Public offices can use the results of the assessment for reporting on the current status of their information governance programs; planning for improvement in a particular business unit or information system; justifying investment and measuring progress.
The benefit of conducting a “dry-run” assessment will enable organisations to be prepared for the mandated RMAT when it comes into force in late April, giving you valuable insight into areas of improvement and how to implement them.

OUR SERVICES
Examine
The first step on our RMAT journey is to examine your current level of maturity against the defined maturity levels. This will be presented in a graphical format as below. With Level 3 being the expected Baseline Compliance.
Benchmark
Once completed, we will plot maturity levels against the Baseline Compliance and other similar organisations within the public sector.
| Your rating | Rating against your sector | Rating against NSW agencies |
RMAT average maturity level | 2.0 | 2.4 | 3.5 |
Improve
Once we know how you compare against your peers, we can work together to plot a Roadmap to increase maturity
Repeat
Once the above steps have been completed, it is important that they are regularly repeated, which provides the following benefits:
- Enables you to monitor the progress made on your journey to records management maturity,
- Identifies additional areas of improvement that can be made in a new roadmap, enabling progress to be made in manageable bitesize chunks; and
- Considers additional processes, controls, systems upgrades and governance structures – enabling maturity progress to remain current, and relevant for your operations.
