Summary of role

Working within the Consulting department is extremely varied. I would generally consider my role to have two halves - client facing and back office/commercial. When I first started, I joined from a Human Resources role – so initially most of my work was in the area of HR Advisory. Within 3 months of starting I was conducting extremely specialist HR work including workplace investigations. Within 6 months I was assisting in general management consulting initiatives including organisational strategy development and organisational development interventions (e.g. organisational structure reviews) across a variety of sectors. More recently I’ve been seconded to a client to deliver a system implementation and act as interim Head of Human Resources. The other half of my role includes commercial duties such as billing clients, development of proposals, designing methodologies to complete work and developing tenders for prospective work.

What’s been the highlight so far?

The progression from being an Associate, through to Consultant and Manager, to Director role has been a very personally and professionally rewarding journey.

What’s been your biggest challenge so far?

Time management is always a challenge – in Consulting you have multiple clients and all of them are a priority! But that’s also one of the most rewarding aspects – you consistently hone your time management skills.

What’s surprised you most about working at RSM?

I’ve been here so long I cant remember the surprises!

To be honest, that in itself is a surprise. I joined in 2015 and there are still lots of people who joined at a similar time and are still with us (we’ve also had people leave only to come back!). 

I think that all comes down to the collaboration and overall culture of the organisation – its just a very nice place to work.

What’s next for you at RSM?

That’s one of the great things about consulting – I just don’t know! But I do know there are opportunities aplenty, and RSM’s motto is “own your own future”. So if I see something I’d like to do, I’ll more than likely be empowered to do it.

What’s your top tip for someone looking to apply to RSM?

Highlight some of the key achievements from any part time work (e.g. were you entrusted with keys or cash in a part time job?) or from university (e.g. did you score particularly high in a relevant subject etc).

Be familiar with the content of your CV – but don’t over prepare either. Don’t be afraid to be yourself at interview we like to meet the person behind the application too.
