In 2018 medical cannabis was legalised in Malta, making possible the cultivation, importation and processing for medicinal purposes, as long as it adheres to all regulatory requirements. All the regulations are comprehended in the Drug Dependence Act and the Production of Cannabis for Medicinal and Research Purposes Act. The responsibility of the regulation is under the Medicine Authority, which also audits the licensee at each and every phase of production. In March 2019 the benefits of cannabis in treating a number of ailments were also recognized by the World Health Organization.
